Founded in 1999 by Mr. Henry Kamphuis, this Calgary-based company manufactures Euroshield® Recycled Rubber Roofing Products and has five distinctive types of shingle systems available on the market.
“The inspiration for our company grew from a shared passion to be environmentally responsible consumers and producers,” explains Brian Eberle, Director of Marketing and Sales for G.E.M. Inc. “Over the last 20 years, we’ve continued to find innovative ways to deliver on our promise and to repurpose generally burdensome material that was once destined for landfill or dumpsites.”
The ripple effect of G.E.M is profound. Their unique shingle formulas contain roughly 95 percent recycled material and homeowners around the world are reaping the benefits. In fact, Euroshield® products were specifically designed to overcome extreme weather and temperature variances that cause splitting, peeling, cracking, rotting, and other undesirable characteristics associated with ageing of traditional roofing systems.
“Our products are visually appealing, extremely durable, and do well in a variety of climates,” says Eberle. “But possibly most importantly, the shingles we manufacture for an average-sized dwelling will incorporate between 250-1000 rubber tires that would have otherwise presented a disposal concern for communities.”
G.E.M. is turning waste into value at every step. In addition to putting old tires to good use, the company has found a way to incorporate any excess generated during manufacturing and installation processes right back into their products. Moreover, once the shingles themselves reach the end of their lifecycle, they can also be easily repurposed.
“We know that every year, Albertans discard six million tires,” says Ed Gugenheimer, CEO of the Alberta Recycling Management Authority. “Companies like G.E.M are helping to ensure that rubber tires have a useful function well beyond their prime days on the road.”
